Smart-LEDA Peripheral Arterial Disease and Neuropathy Testing

neuropathyThe Smart-LEDA (Lower Extremity Disease Assessment), is advanced technology that podiatrists can use to screen for, and assess, both peripheral arterial disease (narrowing of arteries) and peripheral neuropathy (nerve disease) which affect the feet and lower extremities.

The Smart-LEDA device uses two types of tests: Smart-ABI and Sudomotor testing. Smart-ABI measures and compares the blood pressure in your ankle vs the blood pressure in your arm during different phases of the heart beat, along with other important markers such as body mass index. The Smart-ABI helps determine if arteries in the lower extremities are narrowing or have a blockage, which is indicative of peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

The Sudomotor testing component in Smart-LEDA stimulates certain fibers in the nerves to measure and assess sympathetic nerves and sweat response, which helps determine any dysfunction in the peripheral nervous system, otherwise known as peripheral neuropathy (PN).

The Smart-LEDA is painless, non-invasive and takes less than 10 minutes to conduct both tests. Within minutes after the testing phase, the Smart-LEDA produces a graphic, color-coded physician’s report which clearly indicates the patient’s level of risk for PAD and PN. In addition, the data that is collected during the testing phase is saved as a benchmark to track patient progress throughout treatment.
