Exercises That Can Promote Foot Health

From the ankle to the toes are about 26 bones and over 30 joints, not to mention numerous tendons, muscles, and ligaments. These all combine to carry the body’s weight whenever you take a step. It is no wonder, then, that experts have recommended that to promote healthy feet, a daily foot exercise regime is important. This can begin before you get up in the morning by flexing the ankles to stretch the calf muscles, which may have become tightened overnight. This occurs because the toes usually point downward during sleep. Hold the flexed position for about 15 seconds, and repeat about 10 times. The muscles on the bottom of the feet benefit from some exercise, too. A simple way to accomplish this is to move the foot back and forth over a foot roller, or a bottle of water if you don’t have a roller, for about five minutes. To strengthen the arches, stand on the toes and hold the pose briefly before slowing lowering the heel. Repeat about 15 times. You may wish to hold onto a wall or chair back for balance. For more information on how to increase the strength and mobility of your feet, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Pete O’Donald, DPM from Texas. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Various Types of Athlete’s Foot

The medical term for athlete’s foot is called tinea pedis. It is a skin infection of the foot, and it is considered to be contagious. Research has shown approximately 10 percent of Americans are afflicted with this condition, and it may recur in half the people who have athletes’ foot. The most common type of athletes’ foot is referred to as interdigital athlete’s foot, and it is found between the fourth and fifth toes. Many patients notice blisters form between the toes, and it may be an allergic reaction to certain types of fungal organisms. Moccasins-type athlete’s foot is noticeable on the sole and heel. This can cause the skin to become dry and flaky, and it may also affect the toenails. Effective preventative methods for athlete’s foot typically begin with practicing good hygiene habits and wearing appropriate shoes while in locker rooms and public swimming pool areas. Additionally, it is beneficial to refrain from sharing shoes, socks, and towels. If you notice symptoms of athletes’ foot, please confer with a podiatrist who can determine which type it is, and guide you toward the correct treatment.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Pete O’Donald, DPM from Texas.  Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Peroneal Tendinopathy?

Peroneal tendinopathy is an overuse injury that causes inflammation and degeneration of the peroneal tendons on the outer part of the ankle. The peroneal tendons go down the back and under the lateral malleolus, or the bony part on the outside of the ankle. When there is an overuse injury, the peroneal tendons rub on the bone, and it becomes inflamed. Running, poor flexibility, tight calf muscles, and overtraining are some of the reasons this can happen. The main symptom of peroneal tendinopathy is pain on the outside of the ankle. Rest is important in overuse injuries such as this and continuing the activity that caused the injury will interfere with healing. However, other physical activities, such as swimming or cycling, can be substituted to maintain fitness until the pain subsides. If the outside of your ankle hurts, see a podiatrist who will perform tests to diagnose the problem, and offer treatment options.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Pete O’Donald, DPM from Texas. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.
